  • 1 cup bread crumbs (from stale bread)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Oil, for deep-frying

For the syrup:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2-3 green cardamoms, crushed
  • 1/2 teaspoon rose water (optional)

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the bread crumbs, milk, flour, sugar, baking powder, and cardamom powder. Knead the mixture until it forms a smooth dough.
  2. Pinch off small portions of the dough and roll them into balls about the size of a ping pong ball.
  3. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or a large pan to 350°F (175°C). Carefully drop the balls into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. To make the syrup, combine the sugar, water, and cardamoms in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes, or until the syrup thickens slightly. Remove from heat and add rose water if desired.
  5. Once the jamuns are cooled, drop them into the hot syrup and let them soak for at least 1 hour.
  6. Once the jamuns are well soaked, take them out from the syrup and serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!
