In 1967, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he also played baseball.
Broadcasting Career
Gumbel’s broadcasting career spanned over five decades, during which he became a familiar face and voice in sports journalism. He was known for his work with CBS Sports, where he covered NFL games, March Madness, and the Olympic Games. Gumbel made history as the first African American announcer to call play-by-play for a major U.S. sports championship during Super Bowl XXXV in 2001.
