HYBE, the South Korean entertainment company behind supergroups like BTS, in collaboration with Geffen Records, has unveiled the 20 contestants who will compete for a spot on the first HYBE x Geffen Records Global Girl Group. The contestants were chosen from various parts of the world from over 120,000 submissions following the announcement of the HYBE x Geffen Global Girl Group Auditions in November 2021.

Among the 20 contestants, there are two contestants who are of Indian origin. Competitors are from various races and nationalities, including Australia, Sweden, Switzerland, USA, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, etc. The two Indian-origin contestants are Lara from USA and Azrella from Australia. They both introduced themselves in English and in their respective native Indian languages.

Debut: Dream Academy

20 candidates will now participate in a high level audition called ‘The Debut: Dream Academy’. Their tour will end later this year, with the final members of the group and the name of the group being revealed.

This revolutionary global girl group initiative will incorporate Weaver’s platform, allowing global fans to trace the transformative journey of the contestants.

HYBE President, Bang Si-hyuk, and Interscope Geffen A&M CEO, John Jenick, presented their vision for the project, highlighting its potential impact on the global music front. Bang Si-hyuk said, “I wanted to form an international group based on the K-pop method for a while. To do that, I believed we needed a capable partner. In addition to fan voting, a panel of experienced evaluators will provide valuable insight and direction to the contestants, contributing significantly to their growth and development.

The Debut: Dream Academy will premiere September 1 at 8am US PDT and will be available globally on YouTube and in Japan on ABEMA. Expected to run for 12 weeks, the event will culminate in the live finale on 17 November.
