Nalanda University: A Beacon of Knowledge Across Centuries

May 26, 2024 – In the ancient city of Nalanda, located in present-day Bihar, India, there once stood a university that changed the course of history. This institution, known simply as Nalanda University, was not just an academic powerhouse but also a beacon of knowledge and culture. Established in the 5th century AD, Nalanda attracted scholars from all over the world. It was a place where ideas flourished, and intellectuals gathered to share their wisdom.

Origins and Foundation

Nalanda University was founded during the Gupta Dynasty, which ruled India from the 4th to the 6th centuries AD. The Guptas were known for their patronage of arts and education. Under their rule, Nalanda became a center of learning. Kumaragupta I, one of the Gupta emperors, is often credited with founding the university around 427 AD. He dedicated it to Buddhist teachings, although it later included studies in a wide range of subjects.

Structure and Campus

The university’s campus was vast and impressive. It spanned over an area of 14 hectares (35 acres). The campus had monasteries (residential halls for monks), classrooms, meditation halls, libraries, and temples. There were eight separate compounds, ten temples, meditation halls, and even a lake. The university could accommodate over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. It had a sophisticated system of administration and was supported by revenues from more than a hundred villages.

Academic Life

Life at Nalanda was rigorous and intellectually stimulating. The curriculum included a wide range of subjects. Students studied Buddhist scriptures, Vedic texts, logic, grammar, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and even arts. The medium of instruction was mainly Sanskrit, the scholarly language of the time.

The university had a highly qualified faculty. Teachers were experts in their fields and came from different parts of the world. One of the most famous scholars was Aryabhata, the great mathematician and astronomer. Another notable figure was Xuanzang, a Chinese monk who traveled to Nalanda in the 7th century. He studied and taught at the university for many years and later wrote detailed accounts of his experiences.

Libraries and Learning Resources

Nalanda had one of the largest libraries in the ancient world. The library was known as the Dharmaganja and comprised three large buildings: Ratnasagara (Ocean of Jewels), Ratnodadhi (Sea of Jewels), and Ratnaranjaka (Delight of Jewels). These buildings housed thousands of manuscripts on various subjects. The library was so extensive that it took months to burn when invaders set it on fire in the 12th century.

Global Influence

Nalanda was a truly international university. It attracted students from countries like China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. These students came to learn and then took back knowledge to their homelands. The exchange of ideas helped to spread Buddhism and other branches of knowledge across Asia.

The university also influenced the development of other institutions. In China, for instance, the famous White Horse Temple was inspired by Nalanda. The university’s teaching methods and curriculum were adopted by various monastic universities across Asia.

Decline and Destruction

Despite its great success, Nalanda eventually faced decline. The fall of the Gupta Empire and subsequent political instability affected the university. However, the final blow came in the 12th century when Bakhtiyar Khilji, a Turkic invader, attacked and destroyed the university. His forces set fire to the buildings, including the great library. Thousands of scholars were killed, and countless manuscripts were lost forever.

Legacy and Revival

Even though Nalanda was destroyed, its legacy lived on. The university’s influence on education, culture, and religion is undeniable. It paved the way for other institutions of higher learning and set standards for academic excellence.

In 2010, the Indian government decided to revive Nalanda University. With support from various countries, the new Nalanda University was established near the original site. It aims to recreate the spirit of the ancient university and once again become a hub of knowledge and learning.

Nalanda University was more than just a place of learning; it was a symbol of the quest for knowledge. Its impact on education, culture, and religion was profound and far-reaching. Even today, the name Nalanda evokes a sense of awe and respect. As the new Nalanda University continues to grow, it carries forward the legacy of one of the greatest educational institutions the world has ever known.
