The Death of Blogging in 2024 — How Google Crushed Our Dreams

Since the September 2023 Google Helpful Content Update (HCU), the landscape for small and medium-sized blogs has drastically changed, and not for the better.

Thinking about starting a blog? My advice is “don’t,” especially if you’re hoping for significant income and relying on organic traffic from Google.

Here’s why.

With Google controlling over 90% of the global search engine market, it holds immense power over web traffic. In September 2023, Google took a significant step with the Helpful Content Update, followed by a Core Update in March 2024. These updates have severely impacted small and medium-sized bloggers.

Since these updates, many bloggers have seen an 80% drop in traffic from Google. High-quality niche sites with original, human-written content have been hit hardest, while spam and AI-generated sites have surged to the top of search results. Now, platforms like Reddit and Quora dominate the top positions in Google search results.

This isn’t an isolated issue—nearly the entire blogging industry has felt the impact. If you’re a writer, you’ve probably noticed.

Think about your recent Google searches. How often do you find nonsensical content? It’s not that good content isn’t being created—it’s just buried on the tenth page of Google or worse.

As a content creator, I witnessed this firsthand. Blogging was thriving until the September 2023 HCU. Since then, the majority of bloggers have seen their efforts crumble. Unfortunately, this reality isn’t widely recognized.

John Mueller from Google has confirmed there’s no plan to roll back the Helpful Content Update. The update aimed to target articles written for SEO rather than human readers. Whether it succeeded or not, it’s clear that it went too far, and few businesses have benefited.

The HCU wasn’t the last update. It was followed by the October 2023 Spam Update, multiple Core Updates, and Review Updates. According to Search Engine Land, Google announced that its review system would be improved regularly and no longer announced in advance.

The March 2024 Google Core Update has only intensified the backlash from the blogging community. Google’s immense influence has devastated small and medium blogging businesses.

My blog was doing well until the updates hit. I had around 50 articles and was seeing steady growth. But then, my website’s impressions and clicks dropped by 60-65%. Despite adding 30 more articles, my traffic continued to decline. Now, my blog, like many others, is buried. Most of my articles are flatlined in Google Search Console, even if they’re “ranked” in Google.

In fact, I’m now getting more traffic from Bing, Yandex, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, and social media than from Google. With 80 articles, I’m receiving fewer than 20 Google clicks per day. Before the March 2024 Core Update, I was getting 1 or 2 clicks and 15 impressions a day. Now, it’s even worse.

If you ask me whether 2024 is a good year to start a blog, my answer is absolutely NOT, thanks to Google crushing our dreams. At least, not if you plan to rely on organic traffic from Google.
