Turkish Archer Oznur Cure Girdi Stuns the World with Paralympic Gold – A Journey of Unstoppable Determination!

Oznur Cure Girdi Crowned with Paralympic Gold After a Stellar Performance

Turkish archer Oznur Cure Girdi, at just 26 years old, has solidified her status as a para archery star at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. Her journey to glory began when she set a new world record in the women’s compound ranking round, scoring over 700 points. This achievement set the tone for her outstanding performance in the elimination rounds.

Oznur’s hard work and determination paid off as she clinched her first Paralympic gold medal by defeating Iran’s Fatemeh Hemmati with a score of 144-141 in the final match.

The final match started with both competitors tied in the first end. However, as the competition progressed, Cure Girdi consistently hit 10s and nines, building a crucial 2-point lead. By the last end, she had a 3-point advantage and maintained her composure to secure the gold.

Throughout the competition, Oznur demonstrated her dominance and proved why she was a top contender. Her performance was nothing short of unstoppable.

After releasing her final arrow, Cure Girdi was overcome with emotion, bursting into tears of joy as she celebrated her victory.

“I believed I could do it, and now the medal is around my neck! I’m so happy. I worked incredibly hard for this moment. It’s a dream come true!”

Despite the intense emotions, Oznur remained focused during the most critical moments of the competition.

“We trained hard, not just physically but mentally too,” she explained. “Our team is huge, and we spent a lot of time with our psychologist. We practiced various exercises to manage my nerves, and that preparation really helped me during the competition.”

Oznur emphasized that experiencing pressure during training made it easier to handle it during the actual competition. “I was prepared for this, and I’m glad I could control the pressure when it mattered most.”

The silver medal was awarded to Iran’s Fatemeh Hemmati, who had previously defeated the defending champion, Phoebe Paterson Pine, in the semifinals. Unfortunately, Pine did not leave with a medal, as she lost to her British teammate in a nail-biting bronze medal match.

Jodie Grinham’s remarkable journey to secure the bronze medal earned her widespread applause, especially since she competed while 6.5 months pregnant.

Paterson Pine had taken the lead in the third end of their match and stayed ahead until the final moments. She needed a ten with her last shot to win bronze or a nine to tie the match, but she shot an eight.

“With archery, you have to shoot until the last arrow,” Grinham remarked. “The match isn’t over until that final shot is made.”

In a dramatic finish, Grinham pulled off two perfect 10s to win the match.

“I knew I had to deliver strong shots in that last end, and I’m grateful that’s exactly what I did,” she said.

“I put pressure on Phoebe, which was tough since she’s my teammate, but it worked in my favor, and that meant I came away with bronze.”

This marked Grinham’s first individual Paralympic medal. Although she will soon become a mother, she made it clear that she plans to compete at the next Paralympics in Los Angeles, USA.

The excitement at the Paris Paralympics continues, with W1 and compound men’s elimination and medal matches set to take place on Sunday.
