Nigeria: Explosions at Wedding, Funeral, and Hospital Leave 18 Dead, 22 Injured
A series of explosions rocked the city of Gwoza in Nigeria, causing widespread panic and chaos. The aftermath saw streets and hospital grounds littered with bodies. Those injured were swiftly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Tragedy Strikes Nigeria Again
Nigeria is mourning once more after a series of suicide attacks claimed the lives of 18 people and left 42 others seriously injured. On Saturday, three explosions occurred in the northeastern city of Gwoza. Among the attackers was a woman carrying a child on her back. She detonated an explosive in the middle of a wedding ceremony.
Explosions at Hospital and Funeral Site
Officials reported that the suicide attacks also targeted a hospital and a funeral site in the border town near Cameroon.
Casualties Include Children and Pregnant Women
The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed that at least 18 people were killed and 42 others injured in the attacks. Agency head Barkindo Saidu noted that the victims included children, men, women, and pregnant women. Nineteen critically injured individuals were transported to the regional capital, Maiduguri, while the rest are being treated locally.
Attack on Security Checkpoint
A member of the militia supporting the army in Gwoza mentioned that another attack targeted a security checkpoint, resulting in the deaths of two colleagues and a soldier. However, agency officials have not confirmed these additional fatalities.
Boko Haram’s History of Violence
In 2014, Boko Haram terrorists seized control of Gwoza. Nigerian forces, with help from Chadian troops, reclaimed the city in 2015. Despite this, Boko Haram has continued to launch attacks from nearby mountainous regions.
Over 40,000 Lives Lost
Boko Haram has a history of brutal attacks, including killing men and kidnapping women from their homes. These women often venture out of the city in search of firewood and fruits. The violence in northeastern Nigeria has claimed over 40,000 lives and displaced nearly 2 million people.
