Greece braces for ‘population collapse’ amid rising deaths, potentially the first country to face such a crisis
Recent reports show that Greece is experiencing significant population decline, possibly becoming the first country to experience “depopulation”. This news has sparked discussion on social media and billionaire Elon Musk has also expressed his concern.
The report highlights an alarming trend as deaths from conditions such as heart failure, stroke, blood clots and cancer increase among young, healthy individuals. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described the situation as a “ticking time bomb” and a “national threat”.
Responding to the report, Elon Musk said in a post on X that “Greece is one of dozens of countries whose population is shrinking due to low birth rates.”

Understanding population decline
Depopulation, also known as depopulation, describes a sudden and irreversible decrease in the number of people living in a community.
“This is one of the most serious problems not only in Greece but in the entire European Union,” Finance Minister Kostis Hatzidakis told Reuters last week, referring to his country’s rapidly shrinking population. “It’s our priority … whatever happens.”
Greece’s birth rate fell by 30 percent from 2011 to 2021 to less than 84,000 a year, according to the country’s National Hellenic Statistics Service, also known as ELSTAT, which fell below the death rate.
As each Greek receives an average of 5,758 euros ($6,125) in taxes and social security contributions, the drop represents a loss of about 2 billion euros a year in state revenue, according to a report by Al-Jazeera.
The data further indicates that by 2050 Greece’s population is projected to decline by over a million. Prime Minister Mitsotakis said that in 2022 there would effectively be only one birth for every two deaths.
According to ELSTAT, in 1932, there were more than 185,000 births and less than 118,000 deaths in Greece.
The OECD also predicts that Greece’s population will drop to just under 10 million in 2030, from 10.4 million last year.
