Hungarian President Resigns: Hungary female President Katalin Novak resigns after child sexual abuse scandal
Hungary President Katalin Novak Resigns: Hungary’s President Katalin Novak resigned from her post on Saturday. He was being pressured to grant clemency to a man convicted of helping cover up a child sexual abuse case. “I made a mistake… today is the last day I’m talking to you as president,” she said in a nationally televised speech.
On Friday, at least 1,000 people protested in the country’s capital demanding his resignation. Hungary’s opposition parties had also demanded his resignation.
Novak had decided to pardon about two dozen people ahead of Pope Francis’ visit in April 2023, including the deputy director of a children’s home who helped the home’s former director cover up his crimes.

She had said on Tuesday that she would never grant amnesty to any pedophile, not even in this case. He said the reasons behind his decision are not public and all pardons are divisive by their very nature. Novak is an ally of conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a former family minister.
