Powerball: One winning ticket sold for $1.08 billion jackpot

A winning US lottery ticket was sold for the $1.08 billion (£837 million) Powerball jackpot on Wednesday night, lottery officials announced.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Las Palmitas Mini Market in Los Angeles.

The Powerball ticket matched all six numbers needed to score the jackpot – 7, 10, 11, 13 and 24, with the Powerball winning 24.

Powerball says the odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million.

It is unclear whether the winning ticket holder has claimed the prize. If no one claims the money, it goes back to the unclaimed prize pot.

Upon claiming, they have the option of receiving the full amount of $1.08 billion in annuities paid out over three decades, or they can take a smaller cash option as a lump sum.

However, nearly all winners choose the cash upfront option, which in this case is worth $558.1 million before taxes.

Nabor Herrera is the owner of the Las Palmitas mini market where the winning ticket was sold.

He told local reporters that he did not know that the jackpot ticket had been purchased from his shop until he was greeted by a crowd of journalists when he arrived at work on Thursday morning.

The retailer selling the winning Powerball ticket also receives $1 million (£778,000). Mr. Herrera told reporters that he plans to invest the money back in his business and thanked God for the victory. Whether someone comes forward to claim the prize or not, he will get the money.

Located in Central Los Angeles, the store is just steps from the Skid Row neighborhood, home to a large number of homeless people.

Powerball said the jackpot from final ticket sales increased to $1.08 billion from an earlier estimate of $1 billion at the time of the draw.

“This has turned into a historic jackpot race; this is only the third time in Powerball’s 31-year history that the jackpot has reached the billion-dollar threshold,” said Drew Switko, president of the Powerball Product Group and executive director of the Pennsylvania Lottery. ”

No one has won Powerball or its competing lottery, Mega Millions, since April. Both prizes have increased in recent weeks to the highest ever amounts. The Mega Millions draw for $720 million is set to take place on Friday.

The last time someone won the Powerball jackpot before Wednesday’s draw was April 19, for a top prize of nearly $253 million.

Powerball holds the current world record for the largest national lottery jackpot.

In November, a record prize was won by California resident Edwin Castro, who was the sole winner of the $2.05 billion prize, according to Guinness World Records. In May, a fellow Californian sued Mr Castro, claiming the lucky ticket had been stolen from him. The California Lottery has said it believes Mr Castro is the real winner.
