PORTLAND – The man whose ticket matched all six Powerball numbers from Saturday’s $1.3 billion jackpot stepped forward to claim the prize Monday, Oregon officials said.
The Oregon Lottery said in a statement that the lottery ticket was purchased at a plaid pantry convenience store in the northeast part of the city.
The Oregon Lottery is working with the individual in a process that includes safety measures and testing that will take time before a winner can be announced.
“This is an unprecedented jackpot win for the Oregon Lottery,” Oregon Lottery Director Mike Wells said in a statement. “We are taking every precaution to verify the winner before awarding the prize money.”
If the winner chooses to take a lump sum rather than an annuity paid over 30 years, the cash value of the jackpot is $621 million, an immediate payment followed by 29 annual installments. The prize is subject to federal taxes and state taxes in Oregon.
According to the Oregon Lottery, the prize was the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot in history and the eighth-largest jackpot in a U.S. jackpot game.
The largest US lottery jackpot was $2.04 billion, won in California in 2022.
“Plaid Pantry is thrilled to learn that one of our 104 Oregon stores sold $1.3 billion in Powerball tickets,” plaid Pantry President and CEO Jonathan Polonsky said in a statement.
Outside the store Monday evening, Mimi Musser of Beaverton said she buys lottery tickets almost every day and likes to stop at a store that sells winning lottery tickets.
“I’m so happy that Oregon finally hit the big jackpot because it always does on the East Coast,” Musser said. “Now that Oregon has won it… there are more expectations for Oregon. “Maybe we’ll win it again.”
