Dal Makhani Recipe: The Easy Way to Make This Classic Indian Dish

Dal Makhani is a rich, creamy, and flavorful lentil dish that is popular in Indian cuisine. It is made with black urad dal (whole black gram), kidney beans, tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic, spices, and cream. Dal Makhani is typically served with rice or naan bread.

Here is a recipe for Dal Makhani:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup black urad dal (whole black gram)
  • 1/2 cup kidney beans
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup tomato puree
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions:

  1. Soak the black urad dal and kidney beans in water for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  2. Drain the dal and beans and place them in a pressure cooker. Add 3 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the dal and beans are soft.
  4. While the dal and beans are cooking, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute more.
  6. Add the cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, garam masala, and salt and cook for 1 minute more.
  7. Add the tomato puree and cook for 2 minutes more.
  8. Add the cooked dal and beans to the skillet and stir to combine.
  9. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes more, or until the dal makhani has thickened.
  10. Stir in the heavy cream and serve hot with rice or naan bread.

Here are some tips for making Dal Makhani:

  • Soaking the dal and beans before cooking will help them to cook more quickly and evenly.
  • If you don’t have a pressure cooker, you can cook the dal and beans in a regular pot on the stovetop. Just increase the cooking time to about 30 minutes.
  • You can adjust the amount of spice to your liking. If you prefer a milder dish, you can reduce the amount of chili powder.
  • If you don’t have heavy cream, you can use half-and-half or even milk.
  • Dal Makhani is a versatile dish that can be served with a variety of side dishes. Some popular options include rice, naan bread, roti, or paratha.
